Section 1: Preface

In the last two chapters we covered the basics for songwriting, in that you now know what makes up music on paper... the theory. You understand the relationship between notes on a page and the sounds that you hear. You understand the notation and other elements used to give different musical works their own style, and you also know the basic relationship between the Treble and Bass clefs as they relate to each other both on paper and pitch.

In this chapter, we are going to put what you have learned into practice. Each of you will compose a short musical piece of work. But before you whip out your pencil and staff paper, there are a few concepts that we must first cover. So when you are ready, go on to the next section.
